Creative progress

Well I prepared a big pile of various types of paper that are a neutral/buff colour. I got my pencils out and a mirror and attempted a couple of drawings but was not happy with the outcome so - being honest - binned them! I am having a rethink and will try again perhaps with pastels or paint? But I wonder if I've got unrealistic expectations as I haven't done any drawing of people for a very long time...
