The Sight of Death
I was telling Ben about this book the other day. I really love it. I'm not at painter but this book not only changed the way that I look at paintings, but at how I see the world around me.
During a 6 month residency that the writer undertook at The Getty Research Centre in Los Angeles he began to study 2 paintings by Poussin that were on display together in a room a the museum. The book is like a diary. Day after day he notes weather, light, how he feels and how these things affect how he sees the paintings. Returning to them day after day, he began to see tiny details and reflect on elements of the paintings that one might miss at first glance.
I found the book fascinating.

one of the paintings, Landscape with a Snake, is in the National Gallery. I visit it whenever I go there.

Tbh, I got a bit excited when I saw the one below. Alas, close but no cigar.
