Harmony Part 3 – progress report & questions, for my classmates and mentor.
I started by exploring and researching ideas on harmony, in social/political structures and in the arts. Many oppositions, eg harmony, order, symmetry, stasis, oppression vs chaos, discord, conflict, mess.
Felt I wanted to seek harmony which was less static…ideas like interplay, interconnection, reciprocity [ eg bees, flowers, pollination, honey], osmosis,[water molecules spontaneously seeking balance] , rhthymic cycles [ eg tides, seasons], symbiosis – [eg lichens]…occurring in Nature, in the Cosmos and in human relationships.
Decided to look at humans and gardening, as a fusion/interplay/struggle between Nature and human ideas of beauty/utility.
So far I have interviewed several friends where their garden is important to them.
Q 1 have I asked them the best Q, ? Are there others you’d suggest?
Had a few moments to play around with some very basic compositions to see how size and tone affect the perception of balance. Not sure what I learned, but enjoyed it. (5 images; you may need to click "see more".)
This is a fascinating exploration - so much to consider - space, size, shap, tone, separation or touching - and negative space - very complex - look forward to your conclusions!
I visited the exhibition in the Museum in the Park on a cooler day this week, and really enjoyed seeing the grid and the tablecloth in real life - they are beautiful - and I absolutely agree that no picnic is complete without lashings of ginger beer.

I like question C. The notion that a garden emerges from (possibly ad-hoc) creative collaboration, rather than being the result of a single creator isn't one I'd properly considered before. Or that in some cases the collaboration will be harmonious, in others more confrontational. Quite fascinating. Could be that creating a garden is the closest many of us get to producing a piece of art. Certainly the largest piece. So I think this has real validity as an art exorcise. If I was answering these I'd want to know a little more about what is meant by "context" in question A. Possibly better not to know I suppose - let the respondent make of it what they will. I think this is really interesting. Looking forward to what it may produce.
