Artist: Njideka Akunyili Crosby:
Check out this video about Njideka Crosby speaking about her practice, materials, and process. Her process uses collage combined with painting and drawing. She uses photographs as if they are a material just like paint or pencil are. Her practice resonates with two of the guiding principles - Notice More and Use Everything. In particular - Use Everything. Her subject is all that she carries with her and what is in her. She does not have to search far and wide for subject matter. I would like to suggest an optional creative prompt:
Creative Prompt: Take some found imagery and or some copies (not original prints) of images with personal resonance and choose one or more from below to put into action:
Draw/paint into or over them.
Sew into or over them with embroidery thread or other cotton or yarn.
College them togtether.
Draw one element, person or object from an image onto paper with a single colour drawing tool.
Draw further objects from them, having each object isolated on a white paper ground.
Write prose or poetry (hyku maybe) about what you see in the photos.
Incorporate the written word into your images.
Find a patterned surface in which to college either sections of photographs or cutout drawn elements.
Do some continuous line drawings from the imagery in the photos.
