Light still life. Stuff on the garden table

Sat in the garden today wondering what art to do, and I thought I'd just sketch what was literally in front of me. I was trying to draw on the spirit of a sketch I did around this time last year when I was on holiday in Copenhagen...

Purely in terms of rendering light I think the Copenhagen one is much better. It's overall composition is simpler than todays and the light dapples are in in the foreground, more simply falling on the boardwalk. Hence, the light in front of the bicycles is more the subject of the piece than it is in today's sketch. Also there's less of a contrast in today's work, so the light-shadow-midtones thing is less pronounced.. All things for me to think about.

For me - whilst both sketches can be seen as fairly abstract the Copenhagen sketch just works better as a composition. Dappled light is such a fascinating subject. Do you intend to focus upon this theme?
