Project brief - Harmony
Hi all,
As promised here is the project brief for this month - coming to you direct from a campsite in sometimes sunny Exmoor. Hope you enjoy it. There is no meeting this week and we will meet next to chat about peogress in about two weeks.
Harmony - project brief - August 2026
In this project you will begin by researching what the term Harmony means in a context of your choice then you will respond creatively in any way that feels right.
Research stage:
Look in to what is meant by the term Harmony in one or more of the following fields of creative endeavour:
Music - composition, jazz, classical, pop, rock etc
Singing - choral, solo, traditional, folk, world cultures.
Visual art
Contemporary art
Traditional art
Ancient art
Design - graphic arts, interiors, architecture, objects or products.
Personal / psychological- the inner self, spirit, soul, beliefs, consciousness.
Social - politics, utopias, communities.
The world - Gaia theory, ecosphere, biosphere, climate, peace, diplomacy.
You may not find commentary or research on exactly all the above topics in relation specifically to the notion of Harmony. However, you can research Harmony as widely as possible and use the above topics as areas for your contemplation. For example after researching Harmony and how it is said to manifest in abstract painting, you may be led to contemplate how the rules of abstraction, that are so greatly involved in balance, which could in turn lead you to think about global politics and the imbalance that can be found all around us.
Capture whatever associations come to mind however tenuous or outlandish as notes and or drawings/images.
Response stage:
Respond by making any kind of visual art or craft that you feel compelled to do. It does not matter if you think your ideas or background thinking/inspiration may, in your mind, not be readable/decipherable to a potential audience. Aim to have done something in response to the research and response stage by the next time we meet at the mid month review meeting.
Refinement/development stage:
In our next meeting we will look at your responses so far and be thinking about how your ideas, plans, pieces can be refined, resolved or developed.
Have fun - make work - be radical.
Send questions and post progress on the forum.
Dan
