Liminal Space - Research and thoughts from week 1

I started by thinking about the liminal space between

  • being indoors and being outdoors

  • experiencing the inner world (inner self) and the outer world (social self)

I was sat in the kitchen - so indoors - but could hear a robin singing outside. It reminded me of how time I spend in nature (eg going for a walk) blurs into other times of my day (eg when I’m at home doing mundane tasks)

So in that sense I was thinking about the blurred boundaries between actual time spent in nature and the benefit to my overall sense of well being. To represent this I thought of making some work that shows the ‘outside’ natural world ‘inside’ in a built environment.

I came across two artist's that are new to me. The first is Ferdinanda Florence’s paintings of liminal spaces

I like these as they are clearly rooms resembling the built environment but the colours and elements within the paintings remind me of land, soil, sky and sunsets, etc. So I decided to make some work in the form of small sketches of inside my house but with colours from memory that recall a walk out in the countryside.

I also came across news about the installation work of Do Ho Suh that is exhibiting next year at London’s Tate Modern. I'm not sure if the work is about liminal spaces but this quote caught my eye… ‘I see life as a passageway, with no fixed beginning or destination. We tend to focus on the destination all the time and forget about the in-between spaces.’ – Do Ho Suh
