Progression

I continued on from last week. First, I tried to lose some of the more vivid colours that I saw as making the approach over-stimulating / overwhelming. My first attempt this morning didn't really take things far enough, but here it is...

I considered it was as much to do with the proximity of so many different colours, as much as it was with how vivid some of them were, so I decided to cluster the different colours together. I am happier with this effect (below).

As I worked these I realised that having some space within each form may add some additional interest without taking things back towards being excessive. I must've been getting a bit tired when I completed this third one this morning as some of the work is a bit scruffy. I think it gives at least an idea of what I had in mind about leaving some empty space within each form.

I'm pretty sure that this leaving of some empty blocks is as trickle down from Sarah's recent collage work in which she started to leave some squares unfilled, or even cut out completely. Also, it seems likely that my whole shift to this abstracted way of working is a delayed response to looking at Paul Klee's work last month. In any case I look forward to some feedback at the next meeting.
