Failure!

I recently bought a pack of life drawing photos. They are good quality hi-res images. Here's the one I worked from today.

In light of recent discussions about drawn outlines v painted shapes, I used some free online edge detection software to "draw" the above image. For some reasons this type of software always seems to generate in the image in what we would regard as a "negative" (i.e. white on black).

A pretty easy job to reverse this into something that looks more like what we would be familiar with as a "drawing"...

My thought today was to do a sketch in charcoal that was more "painterly" (i.e. relied on tonal contrasts to generate forms, rather than drawn outlines). I wish I had taken some work-in-progress shots as initially I worked quite well to my own brief. But as I progressed I was seduced by the edge-shadows in the source photo and ended up quite strongly outlining the figure. So it's ended up looking almost exactly like what I'd normally produce. I'll try to be more disciplined next time!

Your self awareness (and honesty) is commendable, Ben. Following your thread about the drawn line is fascinating. The black and white images reminded me instantly of (I think) Degas who made monotype prints which have an amazing monochrome look
