One of my Grandsons was home over Christmas wearing my daughter’s cast off black wool winter coat. The lining was a shredded mess - but he allowed me to have it for a few hours to patch the lining and stabilise the sleeve linings. It made me realise that I do different creative activities when I need to express myself in different ways - drawing is done when completely calm, and mind at rest to concentrate on really looking. Sewing is a work of emotional response to material and thread - this repair became a way of expressing love for my grandson in each stitch - and I could add little colourful patches to brighten it up - little tiny works of art, hidden inside the coat where they won’t be seen. I plan to make two more patches this month - with words : ‘Wrap yourself in love’ and ‘ Mum’s coat - warm hug’. And the best part is that he is really happy to wear it.
so beautifully expressed Ann. And how lovely to have put love back into a well worn item and give it a new lease of life.
